Hiking from Kamari to Ancient Thera

By the Mon Signor team, Kamari ·

Quick answer

An old cobbled path climbs from the southern end of Kamari to the ruins of Ancient Thera on Mesa Vouno, about 365 m above sea level. Allow about an hour to climb at a steady pace. Start early, bring water and wear proper shoes. The site is closed on some days, so check the opening hours before you go.

Where does the path start?

The walk starts at the southern end of Kamari, where the road begins to climb towards Mesa Vouno. Look for the signposts for Ancient Thera. The walking path is a cobbled mule track that cuts across the bends of the zig-zag road. It is steeper than the road but shorter and much more interesting.

How long does it take and how hard is it?

The site sits around 365 metres above the sea, and you start almost at sea level, so it is a steady uphill climb. Most people take about an hour going up and a little less coming down. It is not technical, but there is almost no shade, so in summer it is hard work in the middle of the day.

What will you see at Ancient Thera?

The ruins of a city that was inhabited from around the 9th century BC into the Byzantine era: a main street, an agora, a theatre, temples and houses. The setting on the ridge has views over Kamari on one side and Perissa on the other. On a clear morning you can see neighbouring islands such as Anafi.

Opening days and tickets

At the time of writing, the site opens from 08:30 to 15:30 in the main season (April to October) and is closed on Wednesdays. In winter it keeps shorter days or opens by appointment only. A full ticket costs around €10, with some free-entry days. Hours and prices change, so check the latest information before you set off, or ask our reception.

What to bring

  • At least 1 litre of water per person. There is usually nothing to buy at the top outside high season.
  • Trainers or walking shoes. Flip-flops are a bad idea on the polished cobbles.
  • Hat, sunscreen and a light layer for the wind on the ridge.
  • Cash or a card for the ticket.

Can you continue to Perissa?

Yes. A path goes down the other side of the ridge to Perissa in about 40 minutes. It is steeper and has loose gravel in places. From Perissa you can return to Kamari by the seasonal water taxi around the headland, or by taxi.

Prefer a guided hike?
